3DR Iris or older quad?

So, I have been practicing and saving up for a good while now for what I was originally planning on a 3DR quad, but from my time of planning to time of purchase, they have released the Iris, which with the exception of less lift capacity (I was planning for the larger props/motors) it seems like the new Pixhawk board might be worth the extra cash given its superior processing capacities, but I was wondering what you all think?

The biggest issue is (from what I have read) I cant use my futaba 7c with the Iris, and it is also less suited for FPV than the normal quad they offer.

Is this accurate?  Should I be looking at other options?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

  • First up you can use a t7c with a pixhawk, you just need a ppm encoder board, to convert the 7 wires into 1 effectively. (3dr one is only $20). Pixhawk  is defo worth the extra money, as it will last you for years worth of new features and imporvements, the APM is full to bursting.

Load carrying? the Iris is too small to swing large props, so I'd probably just get the pixhawk and build another frame if your aim is to carry cargo / camera bigger than a gopro. However the IRIS is great for fpv as it's light, pretty quick with some higher KV motors, and will take a beating.

Good luck and drop me a line if you get stuck!
