3dr telemetry radio with Samsung S4 mini

Before I try this I wondered if anyone else had tried.

I want to use my S4 mine with 3dr telemetry radios.  The S4 has no power on out the USB.  Can I hook the radio to my phone with USB micro connection while powering the radio with a battery through the D13 port. 
Can anyone see why this would damage the radio, damage my phone, or just not work?

    I'm very disappointed with my S4 mini.  This is just another reason that I'm looking forward to my next upgrade. 

    Try and get a cheap random brand tablet from Amazon/Ebay.
