I have just bought the ArduPilot Mega 2560 Full Kit... plus the Triple Axis Magnetometer HMC5883L. I should have it built over the weekend.. then i'm off to a my mates machine shop, and i'll make the splitter plate for the lower frame onto which i am going to fit the Ardupilot. the magnetometer i'll put on the tail as suggested. I am going to use my X-cell Razor 600E. For those that dont know its around the 50 size nitro heli.
Do i need to buy any other sensors i.e. the Sonar... i can fly a helicopter all day long but this is my first time flying one with stabilisation so any tips would be gratefully appreciated.
If this works well then i am going to try and use it on my x-cell gasser. i can get up to 20 minute flights with this. But i think for the time being a battery 600 is the way to go.
i'll post some pictures when i have it all together.
I cant tell you why the mag was reading bad, i tried everything. As for vibration, i tried to bend the carbon rod before i fitted it, decided it would be up for the job, so bought a separate fin mount and bolted it to that. i dont get any boom vibration, so i'm thinking the mag should be fine, as for the reading, its the best i have ever had it.
I think my heli puts out a strong magnetic field, i was moving my iphone (compass) around the front of the heli and it was going crazy. as i move it down the boom, it gets better, but the best place i could find is where i mounted it. My mount is only 4 inch's long.
I'll test and get back to you.......
Surely the main blades are going to chop that little guy off aren't they?
I put mine on the tail as well but attached to the tail boom using plastic servo mounts.
Great to see your mag readings are better!
It well clear of the blade diameter by 10mm :D if it shakes i'll lower it, :D
Just thought i should let you know, this work really well, did get any shakes, will be keeping this, but trying to find a cap is proving to be a a problem....
Running through the software setup 2.6 on V1.0 MP, having trouble setting up the swash plate, i can achieve the correct collective travel, little bit hit and miss but i got there, i cant see any setup for the aileron and elevator travel...
The rest of it is pretty much as standard, i did try to go into the CLI and do it the old fashioned way, but that dosent seem to be working, the swash plate is still active.....
You can't see the pitch and roll max number? Should be 4500 by default, on the helicopter setup page?
Yeah i saw them, thought it was something to do with how far the heli is allowed to lean, not to adjust the amount of swashplate movement.
Could the labels be changed to Elevator and Aileron.
Getting closer now looking forward to the weekend.
Just ran through the latest setup with 2.6.
Did a little pre tests, dont want to get ahead of my self, but its looking really good guys.
Think you have done a really good job with the code, now i understand that u cant trim from the TX, looks solid to me in Loiter, I'm going to run a full test tomorrow and hopefully get some video.
I have update the setup manual..... link in the heading at the top of page....
I've been looking on the interweb :) trying to find anyone else with some video or pics of their traditional helicopters fitted with APM, would be really good to see other peoples tests....anyone else out there ?
could you redo the link for me ....
it doesnt work
