I have just bought the ArduPilot Mega 2560 Full Kit... plus the Triple Axis Magnetometer HMC5883L. I should have it built over the weekend.. then i'm off to a my mates machine shop, and i'll make the splitter plate for the lower frame onto which i am going to fit the Ardupilot. the magnetometer i'll put on the tail as suggested. I am going to use my X-cell Razor 600E. For those that dont know its around the 50 size nitro heli.
Do i need to buy any other sensors i.e. the Sonar... i can fly a helicopter all day long but this is my first time flying one with stabilisation so any tips would be gratefully appreciated.
If this works well then i am going to try and use it on my x-cell gasser. i can get up to 20 minute flights with this. But i think for the time being a battery 600 is the way to go.
i'll post some pictures when i have it all together.
I still come here once in a while to follow up your progress. Though I can never find this thread unless I get an email with the link referring to this page.
Could someone please let me know how to get here from the forum page please?
I checked every single thread under "Ardu Copter 2.x (Traditional Heli)" but it is not there.
Where is this thread located?
Dammit deleted my reply again!
Long story short, this thread is under "Helicopters" on the second page of forums. Yes it's all confusing and people get lost. Yes it should be simplified, but probably won't be.
Okay. Let's see if I can find it. I am going there now. If you don't hear from me within a minute, then I get lost again:)))
Miracle!.. I found it... Thanks for the guidance Robert. I spent about half an hour several times just to find this thread through the forum tab so I can come by to check it occasionally but every time I failed. I will not forget it from now on.
I don't know though why it had to be this tricky...
Would like to know if its possible to use the Loiter Radius in MP on my APM in Heli mode, as this would stop the helicopter from constantly hunting to a position that is always moving,
I.E. If i set it to a 2meter radius, as soon as it is within the area the APM would revert to stabilise only, it would just generally wander around I think this would reduce the hunting that the heli always does.
Any thoughts on this ?
You know, I think that parameter is badly named. I think it's actually used for circle mode and it defines the diameter of the circle (in meters) that the copter will fly. If you haven't used circle mode before, after you've defined a position of the cirlce (it's center) the copter will fly in a circle around that point always pointing towards the center. Presumably it's good for taking pictures of some object from all directions.
I'm planning to rename this parameter to something more sensible in a few weeks when i give the navigation code a bit of a re-architecting.
GPS is perhaps only good for 3m in that the location that it gives you might be 3m off from reality...but it's better than that in a relative sense at least over a short time period.
There's a 3dr ublox gps that's undergoing development at the moment. It has a bigger antenna and ground plane and it is definitely more accurate so I think that will help a lot. I'm not sure how long it'll be before it's out though.. 2months? maybe less? I don't know but it is coming.
Decided to change the compass mount. I copied the idea from a guy on the 2.6 discussion, but didnt use a DJI part, made my own from 2 futaba servo wheels and a small piece of carbon i had in my little workshop.
Just tried it against a good traditional compass and my Iphone, the heading is really good now. I had been having all sorts of weird compass readings.
Here are a couple of pics, the mount is well clear of the blades, i intend to make a small enclosure around the mag.
Hah! Remember my T-tail?
So what's the deal, you had the mag mounted directly on the boom and it wasn't working for you? That's weird, and I don't see why this would be better?
How much does this vibrate?
I have done something similar, but only because I have my rear mounted servo. I ran the servo wires up the boom supports which is as far as I could get them from the boom, but they do run sort of close-ish to the boom. Therefore, I made a mount which moves the mag off to the side of the boom. It's hanging out about 2" to the right. Seems to be working well for me, but I haven't done much loitering. But I know the mag reading looks pretty good on this one.
But you don't have any wires on the boom? And I'd think yours would vibrate like hell?!
