Hi. I have a RC helicopter and I would like to convert it to semi-autonomous flight. I have a Spartan AP2000i, which works great for stabilising the heli; but now I want to be able to tell the heli to go where I want or program a circuit for it to go around. If possible, different altitudes within the circuit would be great. I know that there are a few off-the-shelf solutions, but what would be the best for helicopters?

It looks cool! I just ordered an Arduino last night and had a chat on the phone today to the guys from Power Grunt Hobbies RE: the AP2000i which is in stock next week!
I think I will try this in stages, 1. Altitude hold, 2. Compass Hold, 3. GPS Position Hold, 4. go to 1 WP in a straight line, 5. Try....... somehow....... to fly and turn without falling out of the sky!! 6. Make it a UAV

I have always wondered why do people remove the flybar? is it better??
AP2000 is for attitude hold. No-one shoots video from a hover. Go for the Helicommand for position hold if U need it or just talk about it.
I wanted to build in these features into my auto pilot so I could set altitudes into waypoints and also go to a waypoints and stay there. etc.... Altitude hold on the AP200i is an option that I will not be using. This project is not designed for photography it is more for the challenge just to see if I can do it :)
While browsing for a good UAV solution, I found this: http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=66279. It's a autonav / GPS / IMU / OSD as the title says. Promises to be the ultimate solution. The price is really good too (about US $200 with all options!).
I emailed DREX to check when it would be released; it's still two weeks from now.
I checked out that company's site (the vendor, not the discussion thread), and, wow, are you sure these guys are serious? Aside from the craptastic site, is there any evidence that they've ever flown a heli with that? Or anything, for that matter? It looks like the only thing they've demonstrated is OSD.

They have actually never tested it on a flying platform, but the guy says that the testing will be done this week and if everything is ok, beta units will be available soon after.
Let's wait and see :)

I was looking at the search area for the outback challenge and from what I can work out the uav would need to cover about 38Km's to get there, search the area, and get back. From what I can work out my Trex 450 would only cover about 12km before falling out of the sky with a flat battery. Were you going to try it with a nitro bird or use a plane? I read all the rules and it's a very tough thing to pull off! What are your ideas for an entry?
The electric is for playing and testing purposes only. I am planning to migrate everything, once it works correctly, on a gasser platform. I had a nitro before but it was just not practical enough (specially at 2a.m; the neighbours were not very happy :))
Craptastic was a really good description of the thoughts that went through my mind when coming across that site. Still (over a year later) no evidence of them flying this board or any other board for that fact. The only thing they have been flying using this (or something else with the same name) is something in an owen?! I didn´t have the time or interest to watch the whole video (which is their only one) on YouTube not counting the "fantastic" OSD video taken from a car...

I am wondering if anyone so far has tested the TechFX Motion on a heli yet, I am also very interested in converting a Trex 450 into an autonomous system, but most importantly i would really like to stick to the electric version.. has there been any progress in the longer flight time battery world? anyone flown more than 15-20 minutes on batteries?
If U use the most miniaturized, optimized multilayer board, fly the slowest least stable RPM, you might get 20min on brand new batteries. 15min is the max using proto boards & 4.1Ah batteries.
Hey Folks,
I just joined this group. Have always been interested in UAV's, done some work on building small autonomous differential drive robots before and I know going to a UAV Heli is nuts, but what the heck.

I have a T-Rex 250 on its way, I should have it within the next week. Once I have a good feel for it, I plan to get it to auto hover using a Gyro stabilizer. Similar to what Uzi is doing here.

I am planning on solving the navigation problem (go to coordinate X) using a Gumstix board. I will try to provide updates to this site as I progress.

Season Two of the Trust Time Trial (T3) Contest has now begun. The fourth round is an accuracy round for multicopters, which requires contestants to fly a cube. The deadline is April 14th.
