Why don't you start with one of the GeoCrawler tutorials on the home page of this website ? Once you have an aircraft which you can remotely control, adding a wireless camera is not such a big challenge.

The GeoCrawler tutorials dont go as far as I want to. I want to get the feed into my laptop and fly the plane with a joystick connected to my computer

Getting the feed into your laptop is easy (and covered in those tutorials). But what's the point of controlling the plane with a joystick connected to your computer? It's not hard to do, I just don't see the advantage.

the advantage would be that I dont have to deal with the antennae connected to the controller. It could be sitting stationary off to the side instead of attached to what I am using as a controller

Okay, well if that matters to you (and as a UAV newbie you've got a lot more pressing technical problems than that to overcome!) google around and you'll find lots of tutorials on driving RC transmitters via PPM over the trainer cable from a PC.

stepping away from the joystick thing right now, would the geocrawler tutorials give me what I need plus the ability to add the joystick later?

I'm not sure I understand your needs, abilities or budget well enough to answer. GeoCrawler 3 is an education platform to teach the basics of microprocessors and embedded systems for UAVs--it's not designed to be a real production UAV.

If all you want to do is get the job done and you've got the money, you might be better buying a commercial autopilot (UNAV picopilot NAT), video system (RangeVideo) and telemetry system (EagleTree).

Or if you really want to enter into the DIY spirit of this site, follow along as we build ArduPilot.

Perhaps the FAQs should come on an ebook for those who can't be bothered to research the site.

Or they can wait until Walmart sells UAVs.
