Advice on build for aerial photography platform

Hi guys!

I have built a couple of basic quads but now want to move into building a drone to create crop maps of our farm.

After looking around and reading guides I've landed on a skywalker 1900 and i have been trying to puzzle together a build from that basis.

Below is what I got together, I would really appreciate your feedback as I am utterly new to to building these types of drones.

It is all from hobbyking which, besides price, is mainly a comfort thing as they can ship altogether to Sweden were i live.

I would prefer if the drone could cover at least a 500 acre field in one run. I am looking at using a canon with CHDK. However i am a bit unsure how to control it

The build is:

3DR Pixhawk kit.

304000007-0 - Skywalker 1900 FPV Glider EPO 1900mm

TR_P60A - TURNIGY Plush 60amp Speed Controller

9468000001-0 - Turnigy TGY-50090M Metal Gear 9g Analog

AM1001A - PolyMax 3.5mm Gold Connectors 10 PAIRS

TR_PC - TURNIGY BESC Programming Card

9070000029 - Turnigy LED Servo Tester for 4 Servo

SK3-2830-920 - Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 2830-920kv Brush..

OR001-00309C - SF E-Prop 9x6 / 229x152.5mm w/ Adapters ..

RX-9X8Cv2 - Turnigy 9X 2.4GHz 8Ch Receiver (V2) (already have a transmitter)

192000002 - Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 28-XX Spare Acce..

  • Hi Alex,

you are addressing a wide topic with your post.
The details must be broken down.

    But ok, some feedback.

    > ...I would prefer if the drone could cover at least a 500 acre field in one run...
My rough idea would be 50m width coverage by 36km/h speed => 1.8km^2/h
Your request is 2.2km^2 per run.

This is well detailed but you may need less resolution (means more width coverage).

For the above values you need a flight time of more than one hour.
By my experience 2x5000mAh 3S is the minimum but possible.

    > ... I am looking at using a canon with CHDK. However i am a bit unsure how to control it...
Start simple. For my SX260 I would put in a 32GB SD-card and let it
continuously take pictures every 2-3sec. Drop what you don't need later.
The Pixhawk will fly a grid pattern.
