I have tried both an Taranis plus with X8R rx and an Spectrum DX6i with OrangeRx 615 both were bound and functioning on PWM . I even updated the fairly new Taranis to OpenTx . The APM 2.8 board said the firmware was successful and all the other mandatory calibrations succeeded. No Radio!!!!
