APM Planner 2 OR Mission Planner?

I have two basic questions.

1) From the following two statements I concluded that "APM Planner 2.0" is more advanced compared to "Mission Planner"... is that correct?

"APM Planner 2.0 is the offspring of Mission Planner and QGround Control, combining the simple user interface of Mission Planner and cross platform capability of QGround Control."

"Mission Planner is a full-featured ground station application for the APM open source autopilot project."

2) Which version of APM:Plane is used to compile latest release of APM Planner 2.0... is it APM:Plane-3.1.1 (ArduPlane-3.1.1)?
What about Mission Planner... which version of APM:Plane it is compiled with?

I want to use ArduPlane-3.1.1 because of Kalman filter feature for a fixed-wing with Pixhawk, but couldn't decide between APM Planner 2.0 and Mission Planner. It seems MP is much simpler and easy to use... but what is the core difference?

APM Planner 2.0 works with the current versions of ArduCopter (3.+) and ArduPlane (3.x+) Using EKF should also work, but if there are some tuning parameter screens that need extra controls for EKF we can add them easily.

Mission Planner has some more advanced features, but you can use both successfully depending on your requirements. Since they are both free to download, you can experiment which works for. Please let us know your experiences.

    Thanks

    • Thanks for the information.

Which firmware is used by Mission Planner... is it ArduPlane 3.1 or some other?

If I use Mission Planner with pixhawk, do I have an option to select the firmware?

For APM Planner 2.0 you are shown which version of the software it is going to install.

ArduPlane is the same as APM:Plane, so it is ArcuCopter and APM:Copter. It's just naming difference.

You can load older versions of firmware using he 'custom' button in AP2.

Older firmware can be downloaded from http://firmware.diydrones.com

      • MP does not "use" any Ardu* firmware.

You can, however, use it to upload(flash) a Pixhawk with any firmware (your choice).

MP does not "use" any Ardu* firmware.

That statement is confusing. as the firmware files are named ArduCopter-v2.px4 for example

  • 1: Mission planner is "more advanced" in terms of "have more features" , certainly all the hidden ones, that partially, ore or less work if you find any documentation on how to use them.

MP is build on the stinking .NET , making it completely anti-multi-platform, while it can somehow run on MONO, every other release some features are broken, ons some cause it to crash.

Mission Planner, on the other hand, is truly build for multiplatform - pretty neat and clean feature set - in very active development - and the devs are well aware of other thing than windows.

2:  I did not understand this.  Arduplane is not involved in compiling APM Planner.   You can use ArduPlane adn ArduCopter with APM planner, except if you should wish to use very old Ardu* version, that for example do not support spline, You'd need to be aware of that - and do not plan a spline mission, - other than mission-items like that  - there is no need for a strict version regime.
