This will be my first RC and I'm planning to make a quadrotor using the APM2. I want your opinion on whether this is a good idea...

To reduce weight/cost, I want to use a android powered phone as the radio control. the quadrotor will be controlled from a laptop and data is send via wifi, and I will design a board which will translate the output of the android phone to the APM2 board.

Also, is there a way to send control signals to the APM2 board using serial i/o at a lower baud rate? e.g. 19200 bps?

But a mobile phone usually has terrible WiFi reception, so range will be limited.
