ArduCopterNG Beta2 - Compass Offsets

Everything works fine until I get to the compass offsets. It displays scrolling data but everything is zero and never changes as I move the quad. I did run the CLI "a" command and made sure that the mag was activated.

 

Any Ideas what to check?

 

This Quad was flying fine with the RC_1 release, this happened when I upgraded to NG.I know that Rc_1 didn't use the compass.

I replaced the bad compass board with my second one and everything works now.

 

@Robert, You could have a bad board.

Make it three people.

Like you I get also only zeros with the CLI.

Tommorow I will take a closer look under a microscope.

Michel,

I used my microscope today and there are 3 to 4 connections on the 8 pin chip closest to the connector side of the board that are clearly bad. You can see a break in the solder coming from the chip to the land. I'm going to have to send it back. :(

Yes, if anyone has a bad board they should just send it back for replacement. This was an early production run and there may be some pick-and-place errors. Many hundreds have gone out, so I would not be surprised if there were a few production errors in there.

I have not gotten around to test my mag.board yet, and doubt I ever will. Is de-soldering and re-soldering of tiny-tiny jumpers in the middle of that tiny board supposed to only require "basic" soldering skills?

Mags are all now shipped with the correct 5v default--no soldering needed. Is yours an older one? If so, send it to me and switch the solder jumper for you.

Thanks, that would be great! I don't know how old the board is, I received it from the FahPah store about two weeks ago. (I will re-check the jumper with a magnifying-glass tomorrow).

Those are all new revisions just made about 1-2weeks ago so they should have 5v soldered as default.

@ Doug & Robert,

 

All the soldering looks ok under the microscope.

There is a possibility that the i2c bus not functioning properly.

Is there anyway to test the i2c?

check if the pressure sensor works. It uses I2C as well
