Hi everyone

I'm a 4th year engineering student and i'm doing a project on UAV's.
I have to build a UAV airframe and integrate a autopilot and auto landing and takeoff system with the airframe. The project mainly consists of building the airframe and then buying all the control systems and integrating everything. I have a buget of about $1500 for all the control systems. I have limited knowledge of autopilot systems and don't really know where to start. Can anyone please help with sugestions for these 2 control systems? I have looked at the Attopilot but I'm not sure if its gona be able to itegrate with a auto takeoff and landing system.

Auto landing is hard (need to know wind direction, as well as fine-grained altitude/ground distance). If you pick the right airframe, like and EasyStar, you can "auto crash" at slow speed without damage, which is what the Raven does. ArduPilot is good enough for that.
And the autopilot.... What system can you recomend for sub $1000 if u don't take the autolanding into account?
Atto is the best, but it's closed source. If you need to program it I'd go for ArduPilot or Paparazzi.
Say that u do get an auto takeoff and landing system, will it be integrateable with the atto and will you have 2 program it? If not with the atto, will it be integratable with the ArduPilot or Paparazzi?
The Attopilot is not expandable to my knowledge.
It is very good for hobby use but not for anything beyond really (in my opinion).
ArduPilot is capable of what you want to do, I would trust Chris on that one. :P
Paparazzi is another option but the code is far more complex.

In your position I would select the Ardupilot for simplicity.
Use an aircraft that can either crash land really slowly or take a look at 'deep stall'.
Good luck.
Attopilot will perform all the tasks you require for USD 800 but has not yet received export clearance. Have a look about for Deans videos, they demonstrate auto take offs, landings and hits ;-)

Paparazzi can be bought ready to go these days and your here so you can find out all about Ardupilot.

Hey Gary

I have taken a look at Dean's videos, but will the atto be able to do fully autonomous takeoff and landing? My project requires that the R/C model it does takeoff and land with nou R/C assistance. At this point this is my biggest problem.
Trust me, it will.

Especially the IMU version

This is not the place to discuss Atto though, try http://www.attopilot.ning.com

Sorry if it seemed or seems that i don't trust your advise but just trying to make 100% sure. Will it takeoff and land from and onto a runway or do u have to throw and catch it?
Paparazzi is not more complex due to it's age but rather it's purpose.
The system was designed from the ground up as a research platform, Ardupilot on the other hand was designed to be simple for hobbyists.
Jano Visser, Hi, my name is Reinaldo, I have just a little same problem.
Im doing a project on UAV's. Im a 3th year mecatronic engeneering student.
But my UAV's need to landing, takeoff and track and fallow some target.
Do you have email?
Maybe we can help with other...I now some software skill, java, visual basic and c. Not really good but
I now something. I have 2 or 3 years to conclude this project...

See you!
How are you going to track the target?
Optically? [Via a camera] or GPS?
Both of which can be challenging they can be done however.
