  • You will need to do a lot more research if you want to be successful.  My advice for your first one is to look at someone who has built one that works well, there are many blogs, and make something similar.

  • Important things to consider:

    1. Cheap motors are likely bad
    2. Cheap propellers are likely bad
    3. Cheap ESC are likely bad
    4. Cheap frames are likely bad

Don't buy parts separately to save money, you won't.  Do it either as a learning opportunity or because you are experienced and know exactly what you want.

eCalc.ch is your friend.  Purchase a membership.  Learn it, use it, love it. You may have to make educated guesses at weight before you buy items, but it should prevent you from purchasing horribly mismatched items.  Read the instructions, you will learn a lot just from that.  It's not perfect, but it will help you understand how component changes will effect you.

    Have fun.  Phillip

    • Hi Phillip, I am planning on doing the same, building my own drone (fixed wing), and I have been researching for quite a while now, and for the last week reading about components and frames every day. I am struggling on getting a rtf frame that will do the trick. I have checked the frames from HK and RMRC that I am interested. Problem is, and I encountered the wall today, is the price. For a RTF HK BIX3 that is 153$ in the international warehouse, the shipping directly to DR its as if I am buying a second plane + some extras.

So I was thinking into buying just the parts (servos, ESC, motor, transmiter etc) and building my own frame out of a V wing model and using simple materials. I know it would be better to just buy the RTF plane but, the cost is kinda of high if loose the plane (plus long delivery times). I would like to know if you have any example or someone that has build their drone from ground up.

      • Sorry, I'm not a good resource for fixed wing questions.

My specialty is multirotors where I've built drones from scratch including hand building my own frames and have programmed my own flight controller from the ground up.

        Good luck with your build.

        Phillip

    • Thanks a lot @Phillip Schmidt! I will do more research! Thank you very much!
