I have experience with naze32 and dj Naza but new with APM. I bought this set (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/APM-2-8-Flight-Controller-NEO-M8N-GPS-5V-3A-Power-Module-GPS-Support-W448/32350412030.html) and use it on a quadcopter. The problem is loiter, it's sometimes really good but sometimes terrible i get a lot of error. When i check auto analysis, problem is "mag field" it's too high. These problems are happened when vibrations are in limits. and this problem affects RTL option also.
Than i realized that I can not collect sample data from "live compass calibration" when quad's nose down. I try "live calibrate" with gps module and without it but always same result. "Live calibration" animation (mission planner 2) stops when i change quad axis to nose down. I tried external compass, internal compass, rotational roll 180 or non rotation. I always get same result. This is the other interesting result for me because i'm not sure apm2.8 uses gps module as a external compass or not. I dont know how to check it.
So, which module is defective or what am i missing ? What do you think? Thank you.

Did you remove the jumper next to the gps port, on the board. The weird thing that my amp 2.8 the compass would only work if I didn't plug into the 12c port, but being plugged into the gps port on the side of the board,,
The 12c port on the top of the flight controller amp2.8 is for 12c OSD, and the port on the side of the flight controller right next to the gps port on the top of the flight controller, is for external compass 12c port..
Check out this link, scroll down they have pictures of the amp 2.8 board and have all the ports numbered and listed what they are used for.. I was plugging into the top 12c port at first and was getting bad compass reading, this helped me..
