Can't load firmware for APM; Cant detect your APM version. Please check your cabling

I just soldered my APM up that I got from DIY Drones (Thing has been kicking around for many months).
I am getting an error message
"Cant detect your APM version. Please check your cabling"
FTDI drivers installed properly and on the correct comm port, I have deleted and it re-installs the drivers no problem. Using Windows 7 fully updated. Just can't get the Mission Planner (APMPlanner1.1.63-32.msi) to load the firmware into the APM. I am going to go over all of the solder joints with the iron just to make sure, they look fine however.

Try a different USB cable and, if possible, another PC. If that doesn't do it, you've probably made a soldering error.

Yes got it thanks!!  If anyone every get the same error message check your soldering!!!!  I accidentally jumped two pins together, what a rookie I am! Thanks Chris.  I am really excited.....

Same issue here- just got new IMU fro my APM1.4 from 3dR, tried different cables, different versions of ApMP.  Full functionality other than I can't change firmware.  3dR loaded APM2.4.1, I want to upgrade to 2.5.3... its saying 'System.InvalidOperationException:port closed' and a few line describing the error and disconnects, last line in text window says 'not a 1280' and thats it. any ideas?

This is getting silly... same thing over and over.  It disconnects itself and says it can't find an APM when I try to upload firmware... annoying.  I erased, reset, tried Xbee and direct USB, tried everything in the troubleshooting guide... nothing. I guess I am stuck with APM2.4.1for now.  I hope someone has something to help here... All other tabs and functions operate perfectly... grrrrr  I've upgraded before with no issues.  Maybe a Windoze issue?

Are you using an USB hub? If so, try connecting directly to the PC (hubs sometimes don't have enough power). If that fails, contact tech support (help@3drobotics.com)

Got it solved.  Had to reinstall windows, msi, .net framework and ApMP.  No hub, cables fine... but got it working in spite of microsoft though... hehe

I soldered PF5(A5)/PF(A4) together.  But I got that "Cant detect APM version..." message.  I did also go over all the joints with the iron just to make sure.  When you open up device manager does your pc see a usb com port for the APM?

I am having a similar situation.

when i connect the USB it shows up in my device manager as "USB Serial port (COM5)" with "set RTS on close" ticked. the LEDS both blue and red come on and the rx / tx lights flash once. when i use the mission planner to upload firmware the TX light flashes rapidly then blinks every few seconds them comes back with "Cant detect APM version. Check your cabling." When i try to "Connect" it times out. when i try to upload any code using the Arduino IDE it just stays on :Uploading" for a long time then times out (the TX light flashes every few seconds).

I have checked all of my soldered joints and re-flowed them (3 times)

tried a different USB cable

updated my .net Framework (win 7 64 bit)

tried a different computer (win vista 64, ubuntu 10 lucid 64)

tried uploading with my radio equipment attached

tried both CLI switch positions

what am i missing?

Raphael- i think this is normal. Just connect directly with a known good USB2 cable. Not sure why, but xbee doesn't seem to function for firmware uploads.

i will look into the USB 2.0 situation. i am not sure whether my USB ports are 2.0. in my device manager i can see the "Enhanced host controller" however im not sure if i am hooking up to it properly. the USB 2.0 ports on my motherboard may not be connected. when i connect my APM it shows up as using "USB serial converter" and the "location" does not match the locations for the enhanced host controllers.

i just tried a USB 2.0 port (took me a while to find it on my computer) still no luck. im not sure if any of my cables are USB 2.0. is there really a difference in the cable?
