Can't create a plan

I have the latest APM mission planner, but when I add waypoints I can't see the waypoints or the mission route. When I click on the elevation graph button it tells me to please plan something first. I have tried to find a tutorial/help file for this, but have been unsuccessful.

    are you in arducopter mode or Ardupilot mode? and do any of the rows down in the grid show "i need data"
