I am interested in buying and Cinestar 2 Axis Gimbal.
Does anybody have experience in using this gimbal with APM2 or APM2.5?
Without using the Radian Stabilization modules?
Greetings,
Hein

Ah Luke, you're in on that too? Good job. It's a fantastic design. Still working on my all-welded design. Too many projects!

After reading your post, I went and bought the Freefly 360 servos to put on my new Rusty's gimbal for both tilt and roll. I just cannot make them work. APM does not support infinite servos. Even when I connect the tilt pot to the servo, it keeps turning continuously. I'm just stuck with these 2 servos and about to buy regular hitec servos to make it work... Unless somebody can help me, I would really appreciate...
Thanks
Permalink Reply by Don Fiedler on February 21, 2013 at 7:28am I have that same setup, it will work, I am using it with the APM 2.0 and 2.5. I had a problem with my roll oscillating, the pot I got from Quadrocopter was bad, I replaced with just a Radio Shack 5K pot, you do not need a 360 pot in the roll channel, only the pitch.......
Permalink Reply by cirilo on February 21, 2013 at 7:42am Thanks Don for your quick answer and I really need your help on this one ! I've spent the last 3 days trying to make it work with no result and it's starting to make me crazy !
1- For the tilt : I connected the freefly servo to the APM and the other cable to the pot that comes with Rusty's gimbal (PEC Rev4 5K). When I put the pot in its neutral position, the servo stops spinning continuously and starts acting like it should. But as soon as the pot gets out of its neutral position, the servo keeps running continuously 360 degrees.
2- For the roll : when plugged to the APM, the servo starts running continuously. I just ordered a 5k resistor from Quadrocopter and I hope this will help.
Can you please let me know how you setup your 2 freefly servos ? What am I doing wrong ?
Thanks in advance !
Permalink Reply by Don Fiedler on February 21, 2013 at 7:50am It sounds like your tilt is reversed, go into MP and change the reverse box, check or uncheck, see what that does.
Roll, is the servo using the internal pot, or do you have an external pot........
I assume you are using the APM 2 or 2.5, shouldn't make any difference. Make sure you have the signal and ground connected to 10 roll & 11 pitch.

Another question, are you using the pots for the roll and pitch, with those servos, you need both pots as there are no pots in those servos. You don't need their pots, but for the pitch it is good as you have many more options with the camera mount, let me know, have to leave pretty soon and can respond later, I am in the USA.........Don
Permalink Reply by cirilo on February 21, 2013 at 8:12am Thanks Don.I will try to reverse the tilt and see what happens. I think I already tried without any luck.
The roll is not using any pot yet, that's why I ordered the 5.5k resistor and that explains the continuous rotation I'm experiencing. I guess the Freefly servos have been modified and the internal pot has been removed / disconnected. Are you using a roll pot on Rusty's gimbal ?
And yes, I'm using APM2.5 and have them connected to #10 and #11.

Permalink Reply by Peter on April 2, 2013 at 7:01am Can the APM2x gimbal ports (9 or 10) efficiently drive a 400hz class digital server as I have my doubts. When I tried APM2.5 (v2.9.1) the servo response was very slow, always trying to catchup, even after changing the gimbal gain and angle settings the lag remained and after there was a twitch or glitch as the servo tried to catchup. Is this because the APM2x can only manage 50hz refresh rate? I compared response times with my old crius multiwii board (v2.2 with 375hz refresh) and found this outperformed APM2. Perhaps there's a settingI've missed in the mission planner or in the source code? Does anyone know how to get the best results using APM2x gimbal and digital servos?

I have the Cinestar 2x, and it's great. The simplicity is what makes it so good. And properly setup it is totally slop free. But the mechanical setup is the easy part. Tuning the stabilization to get it just so, can be A LOT of work.
And regarding price, before I got the Cinestar I probably spent more money trying to save money buying cheap gimbals that never did the job. And now with the RCTimer clone at half the price, it's a no brainer.
