I installed minimOSD to my zagi style FPV plane. I had trouble with PAL/NTSC fetaure and getting OSD overlay on the video screen was random. I soldered jumpers and didn't use second stage regulator. Then I downloaded Gabor's G1.26.1 firmware because PAL was default. OK, OSD overlay problem fixed.

Today I went to field. After take-off I tried stabilize, FBWA and FBWB. Then I tried AUTO but plane went to a deep dive although I have used AUTO mode in the past many times. I quickly changed the mode to manual and tried to save the airplane but from 100 m high the plane crashed.

After getting home I analysed the video and log files and saw that just before the auto mode (may be the APM1 never changed into AUTO mode because I didn't see AUTO mode in the backup video replay) minimOSD went into "initialising" state.

During initialising, can I still command the ailerons, elevators with my remote control radio?

Why do you think minimOSD goes into "initialising" state?

After recovering the airplane, can I fly safely with minimOSD having potential to go into "initializing" state?

I thank to Ardupilot community and Gabor fpr their great effort, I don't mean to complain for the crash, I am just looking for a way of flying safely with minimOSD. Thanks for your support.

Log files attached, I couldn't upload video on youtube, after uploading I will also give the link of the video.

That may have been a power brownout, perhaps because you didn't use the second stage regulator?

It seems so Chris. If I use the second regulator despite of the heating problem, will there still be a possibility to have power brownout? What minimOSD does when heated a lot?

Also, I have never faced with brownout problem before whether I used seperate BEC or not. Just after installing minimOSD I have this problem. Was the initialising one APM1 or minimOSD?

The part I never seem to understand is WHY put the minim OSD on the aircraft?

It can work from either side of the radio link for telemetry. It would seem FAR more logical to send a clean video feed to the ground and then add the telemetry info at the ground. This way, your nice video footage is also not cluttered with OSD. By putting the OSD in the aircraft you have no way of having a clean (non-OSD) video to the ground unless you use the camera to record it, and even then, you will only see that after you land.

If you are worried about power and EMI/RFI, why add more electronics in the aircraft, just keep the video and TX completely separate at the aircraft from the APM all together. This has been discussed before and yet here again, is another fine reason why to not put it in the aircraft. I just think the WIKI should be more clear and suggest this option. The OSD doesn't care where it gets Mavlink from.

It's a good idea to connect minimOSD to the GCS. Please make it more clear how to do this. I mean from where minimOSD will receive telemetry data? How will it be connected on the ground?

Hi Vernon, I use Minimosd in the plane only for the reason that I'm doing long range flights, so the video can reach 10Km, but telemetry not, so after around 2Km I would be out of telemetry.

Using Minimosd on the ground is a good idea, but only works fine for short/medium range.

Leonardo

Hi, it really looks like a brownout. It happened to me three times in the past. Too much electronics for an ESC BEC. Are you powering your ardupilot with a separate BEC? If not, please do it.

Hope it helps.

Regards,
Leonardo

I had been using a seperate BEC till I changed my current sensor from RV to Attopilot a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't get 12V supply for the seperate BEC (as I used to do for older setup) from the center pin of Attopilot. So, I left using seperate BEC to the future.

On the other hand, I have been flying without a seperate BEC for a couple of weeks without any problem. Only difference of the yesterday's crash from the previous nonproblematic flights was adding minimOSD. And yesterday minimOSD went into "initialising" state, APM1 didn't! Does initialising of minimOSD cause rc link lost because I couldn't save the plane whatever I did, changed mode to manual, pulled up elevator, give throttle...!

Anyway, I will use seperate BEC as before from now on. Thanks Leonardo for your comment.

Leonardo, if I use a seperate BEC on the airplane, do I still need to power the second regulator of minimOSD? MinimOSD heats a lot when second reg powered seperately. I use v1.0.

Lessons leraned;

1. Always use a seperate BEC without question.

2. Use the second regulator of minimOSD as it decreases the risk of power brownout.

3. If you use the second regulator find a way of cooling the minimOSD even if it is V1.0.

4. If minimOSD goes into initialising state in the air, you have nothing to do prevent a crash.

5. Soldering the PAL jumper on minimOSD does not guarantee the default setting change into PAL. Gabor's code guarantees this.

If you have any comments on my lessons learned please let me and other potential minimOSD users know.

My minimosd has the solder jumpers in to power the osd from the APM2.. I don't put any power on the osd for video, just video control wire and a ground..

Do you think this is risky?  I just had a brownout death spiral exactly like you yesterday,, also first time I was flying with the oSD.. but I was not using a separate BEC for the APM2 which I a certain now was part of the problem..

Anyway, what do you think about my setup now?

Mack, after the crash I have been experimenting this setup for a couple of weeks:

MinimOSD is powered by APM, but I supply APM by a seperate BEC which is powered by the main battery. This battery also powers the brushless motor.

I supply the second regulator of minimOSD (analog side) by a seperate battery together with my camera and tx in order to have clear video. This way, minimOSD gets very hot, but air coming from the clearance between my fuselage and the wing flows over it so that I haven't experienced any problem for a couple of weeks.

Also Eddie's way of supplying minimOSD, according to me, results in more clear video. I recommend you to consider Eddie's config either.
