Have you ever needed a part but couldn't find what you need? Have you ever thought you could redesign a part to make it work better? Let me help you!
How it works:
You design a part, email the design to me, I'll verify your part is printable, send you a quote, and print the part on my 3d printer. Your custom part will arrive at your door a few days later. Simple. All designs need to be sent as an .STL file, and can be printed in either ABS or PLA.
ABS

PLA

Design:
Please be sure your parts are no larger than 100mm(L)x100mm(W)x100mm(H). If you need a part larger than those dimensions, get creative! Design multiple parts that fit together. Also, be sure to watch your over hangs. 3d printing builds a part layer by layer, and is affected by gravity. Again be creative with your designs, you may need to tweak it to get it to work.
Software:
There is plenty of free software available, so use one you are comfortable with. The only requirement is the software must be able to export .STL files. Here are a few options.
Creo Elements 4.0 (my personal favorite)
Google Sketchup
OpensCAD
FreeCAD
I've added a few pictures of a few of the things that I printed for my scratch built UAV. You are only limited by your own imagination, so get creative. The first two pictures are some clips I designed to mount my carbon fiber tail booms to my wing. The third picture is the rear motor cover, and ball turret cover.

Permalink Reply by Pete Alberico on April 24, 2012 at 6:57pm Here are a few more pictures of some other parts. The first is my battery tray which runs almost the entire length of my fuselage. I had to print this as four separate parts and glue them together. The second picture is my ball turret designed to fit the Sony camera for sale on hobby city. This kit is available for sale if anyone is interested. The last picture is the ball turret mounted into my fuselage.
