First Id like to say I am a complete rookie but I am serious about doing this. I am willing to spend the money on quality parts as well. I am looking to build a UAV with a 1hr + flight time and range of 5 miles. I am looking to control by laptop(gps waypoints with the option to hover) and have a controller as a fail safe. I will be using a simple Gopro. I don't plan on lifting anything heavy other than that and the quad itself. I would like to build this myself even it is with off the shelf parts. I don't want links to go buy complete drones from companies.

It's unlikely you will get any responses. As part of DIY you will need to do most of the searching yourself as this is not a new topic and the information is out there for you to find. Sharing information takes effort, but most people are unwilling unless they can see the effort is shared as well. For starters, look through almost anything Forrest Frantz has posted on this site.
