Do the sensors need to calibrate while powering up?

I'm used to letting the gyro on my conventional RC heli initialize free from any motion until it is ready. I have been doing this out of habit for my quad, but I never recalled reading that this was necessary for the arducopter boards.

yes it is necessary (while the LEDs are running)

it's ready when the green LED (A) lights up and stays solid
