Has anyone tried flying an Ardupilot without the IR sensors?  Assume if you have a very stable platform ie one with sufficient dihedral that basic navigation should be possible using rudder alone with the elevator
controlled by GPS height.

some people use it that way,

autostable planes dont need assisted stabilization but without it is always a risk even in stable platforms
This was how the first version of Ardupilot worked. I think that would be version 1.*. Yes it can and has worked a couple of years ago. Thermo's from FMA Direct were the first major upgrade. Now we're into 6DOF IMU's. Go back to the beginning. Version 1.0 is still here.
Actually the first version of Ardupilot worked with the FMA Co-Pilot handling stabilization. We've never tried a GPS-only autopilot
Interesting Chris, will let you know how I get on. Currently designing a twin boom 2 ch aircraft with a 48 inch wing span as a platform. Balsa parts for the wing bought this week, but have had to wait to print the plan as our plotter at work is playing up.
My first UAV plane (a soarstar/wingo) used Ardupilot V1.0 without IR sensors. The deflection of the rudder had to be turned down to almost zero though, otherwise some serious spiral diving occurred threatening to fold the wings on occasion. Some info of that in the first part of this post: here

I did get a few pretty successful autonomous flights with it...
