FM transmitters?

Hi, I'm coming back into RC after a 20 year hiatus, and see that FM transmitters are no longer in vogue. I'm building my own APM quadcopter, and to keep costs down planned on using my old Futaba Skysport 6A 72 MHz transmitter. In the long term I may upgrade to one of those newfangled 2.4 GHz transmitters, but is there any reason I would regret not doing so in the near term? Would I be better served by one of those cheapie $50 2.4 GHz transmitters than my old Futaba? I paid a good bit of money for it back in the day.

The big problem you will have is the long antenna on the Rx. As well as the larger Rx and finding space for it. I also found that the neutral position is not as stable on the older futaba radios and that will be a problem
    • Ah, I hadn't thought much about the antenna. I suppose I would have just let it dangle free, but now I'm concerned about it getting tangled in the rotors. Perhaps I'll just find a way to wrap it on the frame and accept the loss in range. I would guess that FM's range would still be better than 2.4 GHz, but could be wrong about that.

As far as the Rx's bulky size, yes I noticed that. I 3D printed my copter frame, and discovered the Rx doesn't fit in the designated space. Easily mended with 3M tape and zip ties.

By "neutral position", do you mean he pulse width drifts away from 1.5 ms when the stick is centered?
