Fully molded AP\FPV platform, scratchbuilt

Hey Guys,

This is My newest platform, intended for AP\FPV. (sorry no name yet)

Ive been getting real slow into programming microcontrollers, I have an arduino board
and I am starting to work on a channels multiplexer.

The thing is that for such a platform, wich have 2 ailerons, flaps and more electronic stuff to control on,
I need more then the 7 current channels I have. (i just sold my 9CHP to purchase a 12ch Tx but in the meantime I have a 7ch Tx)

If i really want to control the plane good i need (in channels) :
1-aileron
2-elevator
3-throttle
4-rudder
5-flap
6-flap
7-aileron
8-vid cam pan
9-vid cam tilt
10-vid switch (to toggle between the AP cam and the Pilot\Vid cam)
11-AP cam shutter
12-OSD control
13-OSD control

So, how do i insert 13 channels into 7?
Just temporerly:
both aileron with a Y connector (saves 1ch)
disable the flaps (saves 2ch)

Until ill receive my 12Ch Tx (wich will take some time)
I figured why not trying to program my arduino to take 3 channels and output to 6 channels.
after thinking  about worst case scenario, since its a great glider, i can pass on the motor and the rudder and control it and return it home if i am within 3Km \ 300 Meter high.

so with a new channel mapping:
1-aileron
2-elevator
3- thr \ cam pan \ OSD control
4- rud \ cam tilt \ OSD control

5- 2 flaps with a turnigy speed servo regulator
6- toggle switch \ down-video switch \ middle-neutral \ up-AP cam shutter
7- toggle switch \ multiplexer - 3 way

this way i can operate the entire plane, until ill start to assamble an autopilot (wich will happend eventually but it will take some time)

the multiplexer must remember each last servo position and ofcourse must have a failsafe to control the throttle\rudder again, and when failsafe happends its must center the Vid cam so i can fly the plane back home safely.

So,
what do you think about the whole idea?

any comments are welcome.

  • Instead of your setup I would think more precisely about way to achieve each control, that way you can use the least channels for each.
1 - Aileron (use the hobbyking adaptor that has one in and three out so you can have the channels reversed or the same)
    2 - Elevator
    3 - Throttle
    4 - Rudder
5 - Flap (only need one channel with Y-connector, although the autopilot option would be better)
    6 - Cam Pan
    7 - Cam Tilt
    8 - Cam selector
    9 - AP cam shutter
    10 - OSD control
11 - OSD control (not sure why you need two channels for this but you still have one spare)

Only way to get all this for less is to off load some of it to an uC/autopilot or have less stuff tbh

Admirable goals keep up the awesome work
  • WOW coolest bird ever.......
What are the spec on the bird. And also your video on 10km flight with Dlink. What Dlink are you using. I would like to get that distance too....
I got to say again coolest bird man.... WOW X 10.
  • Hi,
here is an idea I was toying with, instead of having flaps as two seperate channels, why not have them deploy automatically below a certain airspeed (like 20 degrees flaps at 0mph tapering to 0degrees flaps at 20mph) or something similar? IS that what you have in mind for channel 5? I don't think you need a channel for that, just do it all on-board.

Nice bird BTW, what's the wingspan?
