Functioning GPS essential.

I recently completed a hexa, the GPS was not functioning correctly as I'm waiting for an FTDI adaptor to set the baud rate etc.I'm getting a flashing red LED on it,so it must me live, although MP reports

no GPS. Is it an absolute essential requirement to have a working GPS to enable stable flight?

I'm using v2.9.1b with APM 2.5 and GPS is UBLOX NEO 6M.

The hexa took off OK,I kept it low ~2 to 3 metres over long grass as a precaution, just as well.

At first it hovered stable, but started a gentle oscillation that became more extreme and I had to abort

the flight, luckily, no damage.Anyone able to confirm that a working GPS is essential for stable flight?

  • Hi.

I had a similar issue. Tried swapping GPS, cables, waited half an hour in the open sky and still could not get a GPS lock and Mission Planner displayed 'NO GPS'. So, I decided to remove the casing and look for broken connections. The opposite was what I saw. Pins 2&3 of the 'GPS/UART1' cluster were soldered/shorted with each other. I made a wild guess that this shouldn't be the case and so with a fine tipped soldering iron, I removed excess solder to isolate pins 2&3.

As soon as that was done, GPS worked perfect. Attached photos showed before and after.
