Hi!  New guy here!

My main interest in UAVs is for Search and Rescue capabilities.  I live in one of the largest counties in the US, much of which is remote and all of it is desert.  I have several obstacles to overcome due to our remoteness and emptiness of my wallet. :)

I would like to have a camera mounted in my UAV that is capable of heat sensing to aid in finding people that are lost in the desert.  Problem is that the cheapest and lightest I've been able to find so far costs about $3000 and up.  Does anyone know of any more economical solutions currently available?

Thanks for the site and a pre-emptive than you for your responses!

Have a look here  -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMpgeFoYbBI , it may be of some help.

Thank you, but infrared is different from heat sensing.  I'm not looking for night/low light capability, although that would certainly be useful as well, but actual thermographic capability.

Actually, heat sensing is accomplished using infrared radiation imaging.  (within the same part of the spectrum)

As you say, light amplification is a different animal.

Here's a link I saved some time ago. Maybe something there?:

Björn, you are the man!  I've been looking all over for something like this!  Smallest I could find in weight was over 1 kg!

Þakka þér svo mikið!

Unfortunately, it appears to cost more than my Jeep, coming in at around $30,000.

The search continues....

I guess that when someone invents a use for thermal imaging in cellphones, that's when we will see humane prices for those things.

Yes, I believe it may be due to an economy of scale issue.  Not a high demand, so supply is small and prices high.

The cheapest option so far appears to be approx. $2500 USD for a FLIR PathFindIR.  These are usually mounted on cars (BMW 7 series, for example).  Guess I need to start lurking around the local junkyards to see if one is available undamaged.

Just hate to see the build cost literally double just with the addition of a thermal camera.  Unfortunately, I think it's an important addition to my UAV project and its mission.  I may just start with a normal camera and hope to upgrade to thermal farther down the road.

i have just seen an ad for a consumer grade hand held  thermal imager  for hunters available in the US for just less than $3K

sorry no link :(
