Hi All... Newbie looking for direction...

Hi,

I had know idea off the possibilities of UAV until I recently watch Rise of the Drones on PBS.

As an Amateur/Semi-Pro photographer the idea of using this technologically to get interesting aerial perspectives has peeked my interest.

The idea rolling around in my head is being able to launch a quadrature to altitude, orientate the camera in a specific direction, make an exposure, rotate to a new azimuth that overlaps the previous frame, rotate and repeat the process. Then stitch images into panoramic.

I believe there are a myriad of other creative possibilities...

Been think of using the EOS-M

Looking for advice on getting started.  Would the 3DR Quad D be a good place? What options etc?

Looking forward to input and opinion from the forum.

Thanks!

  • Hi Patrick and welcome!

Let me say that as a pro photographer it's been really rewarding to shoot from a new perspective. Of course, I'm only using my images for personal use as the FAA doesn't permit commercial use of drones - if you're in the US. Apparently, you're not even permitted to make and sell derivative works from a UAV. Be sure to research what's applicable for what you want to do.

Aside from that, delving into this nerdy arena is great fun, and sometimes frustrating. Your choice of the quad is a great starting point to learn about flying and tuning your craft, but you'll be a bit limited by the carrying capacity. I'm not sure the stock quad will be able to carry the Eos M with lens and a quality camera gimbal. At the very least you should consider the upgraded motors and ESCs. I was flying my 3dr quad with a Canon G11 and it seems that was on the upper end of it's payload.

Good luck and happy shooting (and flying) :)
