I have tried Mission Planner 1.1.27 and 1.1.31 and am getting similar results. I am using Xplane 10 and APM v1.
The link seems fine, data is populated in the simulation screen, I can fly the plane, I think stabilize is trying to work (it has Ardupilot Output numbers that change, the PID is just way off) but the "Flight Data" and "Flight Planner" tabs do nothing.
So when I try to set my current location with the Home Location button, it says "...commect to your APM and wait for GPS lock." and the Flight Data screen looks just like it does when nothing is connected.
Any ideas what is going on here?
"but the "Flight Data" and "Flight Planner" tabs do nothing". What does that mean? The tabs do nothing? There's nothing in those tabs? They work fine, but the data isn't changing?
If you're not getting data back from Xplane you need to check your Xplane settings with the instructions in the manual.
What version of the ArduPlane code are you using?
I am getting data back from Xplane. The simulator tab shows the correct pitch, roll, yaw etc.
As for the other tabs, I can click on them, and the behave in the exact same way as when the program is running but no hardware is connected. The artificial horizon is locked at level and shows zero airspeed and no GPS link and when I try to set the home location on the Planner tab it says I can't because there is no GPS link.
I tried 2.28 which I compiled and uploaded via Arduino then I also tried it with the code that the mission planner downloads when you choose HIL Plane.
Turns out thats a lie, stabilize is not working.
It is like APM is getting all the data from the sim (it updates all the Lat, Lon, Roll, Pitch etc. on the Simulation Screen correctly) but then not passing it on to the hardware. But the hardware can send information to APM and then to Xplane with no problem (the Ardupilot Output values change correctly when I move the sticks on my radio).
Also just noticed that the first time I click the Sim Link Start/Stop I get the following error in the other console window:
Error updateing screen stuff System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not
set to an instance of an object.

Justin, we don't support Xplane 10 yet. We only support 9.x (this is discussed in the manual)
Ahh, I saw the Xplane 10 checkbox and thought it was functioning.
Not yet, I'm afraid.
Who manages the code for the APM Planner? I fixed it.
Justin: Michael Oborne does. PM me your email address and I'll connect you two.
Please upgrade your Mission Planner to 1.1.33. Xplane 10 should be working now.
Kevin: it's for beta testers. We'll support XPlane 10 soon.
It should be working now. Your Mission Planner will auto-update to 1.1.33
