Hi DIY drones community
Has anyone recently tried to do a HIL sim with Xplane, using the latest Mission Planner?
- I followed all the instructions as per manual.
- STABILIZE mode works great while in AUTO the plane just crashes violently into the ground.
- I made sure my waypoints were correctly uploaded into the board.
I really want to take my plane for the maiden, but i would like to get the HIL sim working first.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Regards,
Adrian

Permalink Reply by Michael Pursifull on October 4, 2011 at 11:56am No worries. In between the time you posted and now, I created a new ArduPlane platform, installed an APM/oilpan, ESC, servos, (haven't hooked up the air speed gear yet) and patched it into xplane.
For reference, I am using
Xplane on mac, now upgraded to the latest version 9.7 I think
MP 1.0.76 on Win7 home, running in parallels
ArduPlane 2.24 on APM/oilpan "H" rev
I was able to connect and fly missions, in stabo, manual, and auto. I flew in the SF airport that comes up by default, but then moved to the Texarkana airport. So it does work. For my configuration, I needed to use a slightly different configuration for the network setup, since I was using xplane on my mac, and the rest was running in parallels, so it is a "different computer"
In any case, I can report that it did work for me.
Now, about your logs. If you are connected to the APM, and I assume you are, because you are running HIL, then your MP will create logs. You can access them from within MP by going to the bottom left ... well, see here, or you can find the files in your Mission Planner directory (wherever you put it) in the "logs" directory. They are named by date/time.
You can *also* retrieve the flight data from the APM onboard "black box", but that is a tiny bit harder. See here for the simpler of two ways to get to that data.
The log will show what happened, to a point. I suspect, without seeing the logs, that there is some type of altitude mismatch, and the flight plan tried to "fly" into the ground to follow the instructions it thinks you meant, if the plane flew in stabilize.
It is easy, in xplane, to fly in weather conditions that are less than ideal for a model aircraft. 40mph cross winds at 6000-12,000 feet, for example do not make for ideal scale model flight conditions ;)
In any case, I'd recommend posting some logs here, and seeing if someone knows how to interpret them to see what is happening. You might also want to save and post your flight plan from the Flight Plan section of MP.

I solved my problem in the following way:
First I recommend you to choose a different airport. Somewhere away from mountains and buildings is good.
Don’t try to takeoff or land straight away. Set some easily reachable waypoints and watch the behaviour of the plane.
Take a look at http://code.google.com/p/ardupilot-mega/wiki/MPPID . Here you can configure your PID settings. I prefer to set Xtrack gain to 0, at least at the beginning.
Hope this helps

Permalink Reply by Anton de Jager on October 5, 2011 at 3:56am Thanly you MIke and Adrian, for your prompt and comprehensive responses i will try and advise, just one question before i do, while in auto pilot mode should i be able to control, the plane from my radio? I am unable to do so, no response while in auto, i am pretty sure i was able to do so in the past when the system worked.....

When you are in AUTO mode you should still have control over the plane.

Then there is one of the problems, once i change to auto i have no control all movements are ignored no control from radio. Attached to this mail a copy of flight plan as well as log file from short flight, and the switch to auto which sends it tumbling down immediately, hoping someone can check and advise what is causing this?
