HK Pilot 2.7 works with copter firmware but not plane?

just setting up an HK pilot (I currently use 3DR apms in other planes, just thought I would try one out). Can connect and flash firmware but then "times out" trying to connect again after firmware successfully loads.

Tried drivers and setup through windows, tried different cables, tried over the 900hz radios, reloaded MP software, tried almost ALL old firmware versions, factory reset through terminal, etc etc and nothing.  At the top of the mission planner window it says "calibrate INS keep plane still" or something like that.

Interesting part, just for fun I loaded up a quadcopter firmware, and VOILA it works fine and all the sensors can be calibrated and it shows me info on flight screen.  Also tried Rover and it didn't work, just the quad one.

Anyone run into this?  I figured the board was fried but find it weird that it works with one firmware but not the one I want.
