Indoor Motion Tracking System

Hello,

First of all, thanks you so much for all I've already learned from you concerning UAVs !

My name is Colin, and I'm a french creative designer for a very new start-up mixing living art and technology. The global project is very exciting, this time we are like child allowed to hack techno to make beauty with it !

One of the first project I'm involved for is to create a show between 7 dancers and an UAV swarm (between 20 to 30 of them)We've 2 years to devellop a system who could be played indoor, with public and variables size of stages

It must be safe for the dancers and the spectators

That's why we need a precise system of tracking, to make the best choregraphy we could avoiding the contact between dancer and UAV.

We got a nice budget to use a motion tracking system.

But the philosophy of the start-up is to use exactly what we need and avoid waste.

You guys do you have any experience concerning some Indoor Motion Tracking System who could help us ?

Of course I've seen the Vicon system, but I'm a bit lost about the products choices,

which system could be enough precise for our needs ?

Sorry for my poor grammar, hope what you read make sense for you !

Here some links to illustrate the way of the UAV project

  • Hi Colin,

As you can see from the number of replies, this is not a simple project. At this time there is no suitable technology that can guarantee the safety of performers and the audience when there is a close interaction with UAVs. My suggestion is to use an inherently safe type of UAV - one with the blades completely shrouded so then when accidents happen there is less chance if injury like what happened here -> (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOTOymQJMLk).

    Good luck! LD

    • Hi,Thanks for your message !

I hope we are enough conscious about the risks of injury, you're alright to remind us that in this way

I keep the YT link, sure it will be useful to show this to the team if we get too confident !

There are strict laws here in France concerning UAV and Public, they will have to be quite far each from others (or separated by a safety net, even if I don't like the idea)

We were thinking about a kind of cage surrounding the screw AND, cause the thema of the performance is the seabed, we thought dress the UAVs with a 'plastic' structure that could absord the shock.

We work with a costume designer who will get the mission to find ways for this.

My question in this topic is more close the learning about the technical stuff we need than the security risks we have :

Do you have any motion tracking system to recommand (Optitrack, Vicon, MotionAnalys)  and why ?

Which one of them could be enough precise ? depending of which parameters ? (the speed of the dancers, UAV, density of them, ..., ?)

      • Hi Colin,

If you haven't been in touch with anyone at Vicon, please do so. I am sure one of our technical team will be able to help answer any questions you have.

I suspect though that the question that needs to be answered is which system is most reliable?

What happens when the UAV is incorrectly identified or samples are skipped is likely to be significantly more important (for those that have safety concerns) than being measured a few mm off its actual position - or heading.

Vicon Tracker provides the most reliable data of any optical tracking system.

(As well as being the most precise...)

        Regards,

        Warren

        • Hi Warren,

          Thanks first for your responding,

I'm already in contact with Vicon, it looks that the Tracker software is very powerful.

Vicon looks necessarily like the best choice we can do. I've post this thread especially in the hope someone could share some positives experience with an other system, it's always good to get some points of comparison !

          Regards,

          Colin.
