Iris+ takeoff issues

I'm running into issues when I try and fly my Iris+ through MAVProxy using scripts I've written. Every time the drone even tries to takeoff, it immediately flips over and crashes without even really leaving the ground. My script looks very similar to the simple_goto.py script found here. Are there any special initialization steps I need to take before taking off while using an actual drone? Are there any examples that are meant for flying real vehicles I could take a look at? Thanks.
