Landing Using Mission Planner

Hey guys. I will be flying the 3DR Aero aircraft in the next couple days using the Pixhawk autopilot connected to Mission Planner. I'm not sure about how Mission Planner will handle landings and I don't want to accidentally pile-drive the plane into the ground upon landing.

When I set a WP in Mission Planner as "Landing", will the aircraft reach that WP and then start the landing process? Or will it start it's descent to the final waypoint after it reaches the second to last WP? What heading will the autopilot correct to for landing? Will it land in the direction of the final waypoint or in the direction towards the home point?

Finally, I read the tutorial pg on auto takeoff and landing and they said to set the altitude to 0 in most cases for landing. In which cases would that not be true? I mean you are setting the altitude above ground right? Should I give it a few meters above ground so it doesn't kill throttle too late?

Thanks in advance for answers to any of these questions!

Yes, this is how it works.

Will it land in the direction of the final waypoint

Yes, until it reaches the flare phase as defined by the LAND_XXX parameters, then it will hold its heading while minimizing its bank angle by whatever you chose in the parameters.

If your landing area is a different elevation than it was at GPS lock, then you need to adjust for the difference. Otherwise don't buffer it, use zero.

Read up on those LAND_XXX parameters
