Hi everyone !

I have for project to make a helicopter I could control from my computer with radio waves. The system would not need auto pilot as I would pilot it with help from video imagery and radio waves. The video imagery will be captured from a video camera on the nose of the helicopter but I don't know how the video feed is going to be transmitted, as I need continuously clear video and radio transmission to control the helicopter.

The helicopter should be at first take off and be piloted from eye, and then the pilot would use the fpv video feed to pilot it from distances. The rc helicopter should be small and cheap, but capable of transporting mini payload and be able to flight quite easily with quite good stabilization. I don't need it to be 5 km far, but to be in the air at a mid distance providing clear radio and video transmission.

So, my main problems are :

- The video transmission.

- The radio control of the small helicopter at fairly good distances.

- Which RC helicopter / airframe am I gonna choose.

What are your solutions and advices for this ?

Thanks for your future answers.

PS: I don't know if its the good forum, but it was either not in arducopter, and since my main problem is the aiframe, I decided to put it here, thanks

PPS: I did many research work but I couldn't find my happiness. I found a "how to create your own rc helicopter" tutorial (which is here: http://www.angelfire.com/blues/heli_project/index.html but his main material is made of circuit board with the copper layer removed, I think there are easier and cheaper ways to maybe buy one already existing rc helicopter and then mod it, and since my project doesn't need auto pilot but long range fpv...)

PPPS: Sorry for my english.

I have found a nice detailled guide : http://www.rcexplorer.se/page14/FPV/FPV.html

Now my main problem is to find a cheap video transmitter+receiver along with a cheap and stable outdoor helicopter...

Thanks ! :)

Hi I'm back !

I'm disappointed nobody answered. Nobody has any ideas on getting cheap video transmitters/receivers ? Nobody know anything on a decent helicopter paltform ?

Thanks.

Cheep video transmitters, or good low cost ones... there is a difference. Also weight and whats legal in your area.

Personaly I use 5.8 for video, but you may be limited on choices per above.

Here is cheep, 20bucks for the transmitter, 35 for the receiver; but you have to build/buy a 3.3v voltage supply the transmitter.

http://www.rangevideo.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=35_59

Here is good place to look, but not so low cost, thier all in one camera transmitter is nice but not much power.

http://www.fpvhobby.com/94-8ghz-10mw-camera.html

Thanks for your answer !

I search for low-cost and cheap transmitters, and will compare them to see the best, but I mainly seek for the cheaper stuff. Thanks you for your website. The offers look nice. Is the in-built transmitter good ? Or I could get simply the rangevideo transmitters & receivers and recycle the camera from an old camera ... Would it be possible ?

I also found this site : http://www.firstpersonview.co.uk/transmitters/2.4ghz but the transmitters & receivers are more expensive and their range is said to be 1km. If I could get 2 km with cheaper material, I take it.

So, you think I could recycle one camera and use it with the transmitter ? Wouldn't voltage make a mess ?

Thanks !

Here is a 200mw full kit from fpvhobby... I've bought from them before and are good quality shipping etc.

again, its a bit higher price, but good folks too.

 http://www.fpvhobby.com/95-8ghz-mini-combset.html

here is the same kit with but is 10mw like the all in one.

http://www.fpvhobby.com/96-8ghz-micro-combo-set.html

Edit: hit save too fast...

I found this videocamera at this website for surveillance cameras :

http://www.securitycamera2000.com/categories/Best-Deals/?price_min=...

This camera http://www.securitycamera2000.com/products/Vari%252dFocal-CCTV-CS-L... looks fine and cheap, could I use it with my transmitter?

Or this one : http://www.securitycamera2000.com/products/Mini-Video-Audio-1%7B47%...

I really search for the cheaper and working stuff out here :)

I could get one actually working kit for 63€ (including camera, transmitter and receiver) and some more for adaptators and stuff. I think I'm gonna head into that. Now, are there some helicopters flyers out here? What are your advices for a cheap but decent and pretty stable ?

130€ for transmitter/camera/receiver looks too much for me. :(

Thanks !

If your going for long distance, then dont use an IR enabled camera, they just suck the power and give no return for flying distances at all.

If you want a good camera for cheep, look up Big Eyes (spy cam) its 1280x960/30fps hard steel case, weather proof (i know mine went through two weeks in the rain till i found it) up to 32gig, tv out 520lines, and auto record based on motion (not sound).

I paid like 58 usd plus shipping from hk

Yes but again I really want cheap stuff :(

60€ for a camera looks maybe too much. Have you got any ideas for a cheap CCD camera ? (like in 20,30 € max.)

But I'll look for Big Eyes if I don't find better for cheap price. I also want very light because if I don't find cheap helicopters paltform, I will buy the cheapest and buy a mini rc helicopter.

Ya if you want a cheep camera that only is for fpv, (and doesnt record localy higher quality video), then those other ones I linked to before are fine, take a look at some of there other cameras. its all about quality of live picture for fpv... cheep cheep cameras tend to be over or under exposed and nothing to do about it. think of getting lost without a map... :) oh my which way is up if i only see sky

The other one you linked to me ? You've only shown me the expensive built in transmitter :(

Big Eyes look really cool for HD video but if my helicopter can't fly it wont be very useful. I really need a cheap and light camera :)

So please, what camera were you talking about ? :)

Oh, and thanks for all the help from the beginning :)

Edit: I also found this website : http://www.tradetang.com/cheap/ccd-camera.html

This one could do ? http://www.tradetang.com/for-sale/420-TVL-CMOS-CCD-Color-BOX-Securi...

I searched for some helicopters. It seem very hard to find a cheap working RC helicopter, capable of transporting small payload, under 100€. :(

Has someone flown RC helicopters out here ? :)

But I saw that helicopter : http://www.xheli.com/exi450arfrar.html

I suppose its only the plastic airframe, with no electronics. Anyway, would it be cheaper than a full 250-400€ trex 450 clone ?

So if I take this one are all the electronics in the box or shall I buy them after ?

Thanks !

Here is a good option for the IR illumination power sucking...a laser.

http://www.newcon-optik.com/ir200.html

If you have the pan tilt or roll gimbal of some sort, just fix zero the illuminator to the center of the camera's FOV and you should get good images at distance...considering the 16 degree of illum at a few hundred yards.
