Magnetometer on APM: How Do I Know It Works?

My question is if i solder on the magnetometer for the APM and used it on a airplane instead of a quad rotor, how do I know it works or if it does anything?

The only thing in the Mission Planner is "Enable Magnetometer." Yet there is nothing that tells me it has been enabled or if it's reporting any values to me. Nor can I tell whether or not the yawing readings are more accurate, as I don't have any way to measure performance increase.

Is there a way to tell me that it's at least giving me readings?

  • Ok, I'm sorry,I've mixed concepts (and my poor english). I was talking about the ArduCopter.

An easy way yo obtain raw data from mag? (load ArduPlane code and test in CLI mode is the best?)

  • Yes, I know, but in test mode "compass" command does nothing and when I type help, under the test mode, no compass appears in the list of available commands.

  • I'm doing something wrong? or my mag is not working?

  • There is no compass test option in test mode at APM 1.0.96 as manual says

In setup mode, there is a "compass" option. Mine returns this data:

    setup] compass
    Op:[on,off]

    Compass

    ----------------------------------------

    enabled

    Mag Dec: -1.3800

    Mag off: 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.0000
    setup]

    Is not returning data?

Use the CLI test suite, as described in the manual.
