Magnetometer on APM: How Do I Know It Works?
My question is if i solder on the magnetometer for the APM and used it on a airplane instead of a quad rotor, how do I know it works or if it does anything?
The only thing in the Mission Planner is "Enable Magnetometer." Yet there is nothing that tells me it has been enabled or if it's reporting any values to me. Nor can I tell whether or not the yawing readings are more accurate, as I don't have any way to measure performance increase.
Is there a way to tell me that it's at least giving me readings?

Use the CLI test suite, as described in the manual.

There is no compass test option in test mode at APM 1.0.96 as manual says
In setup mode, there is a "compass" option. Mine returns this data:
setup] compass
Op:[on,off]Compass

Mag Dec: -1.3800
Mag off: 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.0000
setup]Is not returning data?

You're in the setup mode, not the test mode. Those 0s just say that there are no mag offsets (which is normal--they're set in flight).
Did you go into Test/Compass in the CLI? That's the one that outputs data.

You are not doing what Chris is saying.
You are in the compass option in the setup menu, which is used to enable/disable the compass. You need to go into the test menu and run the compass test.

I tried enabling the compass, but it won't ever enable. Does this mean it doesn't work at all?

Yes, I know, but in test mode "compass" command does nothing and when I type help, under the test mode, no compass appears in the list of available commands.

Juan Carlos: I thought you were using the ArduPlane code? There is definitely a Compass test in the CLI Test menu in ArduPlane. There is not one in ArduCopter.

Ok, I'm sorry,I've mixed concepts (and my poor english). I was talking about the ArduCopter.
An easy way yo obtain raw data from mag? (load ArduPlane code and test in CLI mode is the best?)
