Hi everybody
I am new to this great site and love it .
I have bought an old army target drone (10feet long)and
want to turn it into a drone for marine survey.
In the area where I am currently based we have a lot of
oil spillage from supertankers cleaning their tanks and the pollution is quite
high.
I need help in regards to what will be the best equipment
to buy in order to succeed building a fully autonomous rugged drone.
My current drone has an engine but I need to get a new
one and the servos. Nothing else
Requirements:
-Long range at least 6 hours airborne
-Telemetry with at least 10miles range
-Fully autonomous including returning to programmed GPS
point
-Live video feed with night vision
-Good ground station
Thanks for your help

Permalink Reply by andy j on October 26, 2011 at 6:50am Awesome drone! that sounds like a great project! As far as telemetry goes - if you can wait a little bit, I am working on an arduino shield with a peak 40km capable radio, servo connections, pressure/temp sensor, and hook up for external gps, and video (2 sources can be video switched - and the output sent to your video transmitter!). Oh, and it can be controlled via a ps3 controller! much more light and comfortable than a big RC remote! I will get the boards back from the prototype shop in about 2 weeks!

Permalink Reply by jean brissi on October 26, 2011 at 7:43am I am definitively going to wait. I still have a lot to do
like getting a good motor, long range tank etc..I do hope you can succeed as
40km range sounds great. Keep in touch

Be sure to check up on the Dreamshield in the next few weeks!

Have you considered that airframe you have is not well suited to the application and the performance demands that you have outlined in your post? You may want to consider using it as a testbed to integrate an autopilot, telemetry systems etc and then find a more efficient airframe for your final solution.
If I am not mistaken that target drone was manufactured by FMA (Direct) as a target drone for anti aircraft artillery. I am sure that Fred Marks will have spares lying around for it.
Good luck

You are right but i have to give a shot. There is a lot of space in this airplane and payload is great.Furthermore it is very rugged. I have tried to purchase a more suitable platform but the guys i've contacted wanted far too much for my budget. I 'd rather save cash for the electronics and get what's best.
Will contact Fred Marks. Thanks a lot
