New drone design

Hello everybody!

My name's Jacob and I'm new to both the world of UAVs and DIY Drones. I'm hoping to receive some feedback for a drone idea I had.

The concept is to make a small reconnaissance drone for the military. The idea is to take a body the same size and shape (a hollow cylinder) much like a smoke grenade, have two wings that fold out of the sides, and a propeller at one end. The idea is that you could throw it like a regular drone, and the thrust from the initial throw would be how the drone stays airborne.

Is this a good idea? Is it plausible? Is it potentially good but just worded horribly in this post?

Please give me feedback, I'm eager to start modeling parts in SolidWorks.

Thanks everybody!

  • Your idea has merit, and I hate to say this, but you arr wasting your time if you want to go Military with it; the Military is far advanced in building drones of any size, but instead I would encourage you to invest yourself and your designs in the private/hobby/commercial realm, where innovation is very much needed. A day may come when the military turns to the private/hobby drone realm for revolutionary designs.

We don't actually permit discussion of military RPAS here.

        - Really? what is the reasoning for that?

What could be wrong with the simple concept of Remotely Piloted drones?

Are not all multirotors basically remotely piloted?

          @J Smith,

You missed the word "military" in the sentence "...military RPAS here."

You can discuss the design of RPAS here as much as you like, just do not discuss developing RPAS for military purposes.

From the TOS: 6) No discussion of military applications of UAVs. This site is just about amateur and civilian use.

          • I see your point, and I see there should be a clear division between Military and private drones, with the caveat that we shold also draw a line of some sort, not necessarily limiting, but at least symbolic between commercial drones and truly private drones, as otherwise we face private or hobby drones being lumped in with commercial drones and being regulated as commercial drones, which could be disasterous for the private/hobby drone field.

Otherwise, I'd like to ask for some further clarification...

It isinevitable that some concepts from military drones may be employed in the development of private drones, and in time, when people advance the development of private drones, the military may take interest in those developments, thus the line to some small extent between the two may become blurred, if not already for all I know.

Also, I am formally requesting any assistance you can offer regarding my posts concerning setting standards before they are set for us. This should be a very importanht issue, and if the administrators and moderators get behind it, it would help everyone in the long run.

            Thank you.
