Newb Questions, building a drone.

A buddy and I are wanting to build a drone and thought we would ask her to get some recommendations on a good drone setup.

We would like to have a decent flight time, 2-3 hours with a camera, so if it's even possible, I'm sure it would have to be a fixed wing. We were looking at something like the techpod as the base, but if anyone has a better recommendation, we would be glad to hear it. We would like to keep it all electric too, but may be willing to go gas to meet 2-3 hour flight time specification if it's not TOO difficult / troublesome.

For the flight controller we are looking for something that is open source so that we can modify and tinker with it. Also something that is less likely to get damaged in a crash. Our current two choices are the 3D robotics Pixhawk and APM 2.6. We are leaning towards the APM because the Pixhawk looks like it will jerk them sockets out during a crash. Both are pretty up there in price, so any recommendations there also appreciated.

Both of us are kind of new to RC aircraft in general, so will be gradually stepping into this. Not going straight off drone. Build aircraft, go RC first and get used to it, then start adding in the drone components. We are looking forward to any advice.

Thanks,
Shane Anderson
