Open source UAV build

I'm looking to start a build log/project for a UAV/FPV platform. Fixed wing (most likely) with something around 8-10 foot wingspan.

I'm planning to accomplish this project in the following order:

1. Finding out what the biggest need and capability for this sized UAV will be. Wanting input as to what your 'dream' platform would be, 'must haves' and all around input as to what you want it to be able to do. I know what I want it to do now, but making a tool for the community would be great.

2. Basic design. After compiling all the design requirements, outline the basic physical dimensions and options.

3. Design major components and test. Using wing and fuselage designs test performance and efficiency with software based testing tools to keep prototype cost as low as possible. Very new to this area, so a lot of guidance would be needed to keep up the speed in this step as I will have to self teach otherwise.

4. Testing prototype(s). These will be wood with minimal composite strengthening, and heat-shrink skin (monokote) construction. Basic flight behavior and endurance testing will be done with these.

5. Production prototypes. These will be full composite aircraft to test final fit and function. Master molds will be made from these polished air frames.

6. Final product.

I am aware that there are more than a few capable air frames: albatross, shyhunter, x8, skywalker, penguin, etc. Although I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel, I can't say that the final version of this product wont be similar to any of these. I won't consider it a success unless I/we can get the 'shipped to your door' cost much less than the albatross air frame ($1,750.00), as that is one of the cheapest industrial quality drones that I've seen.

Ideal outcome is for a air frame that can fill multiple roles in many different environments, so composite is a must in terms of durability and strength, it also allows the ability to mix materials for useful features like emi protection and damage resistance.

I am more than happy to make and send some air frames to various persons to help test and as 'rewards' for helping to get this off the ground. I will be doing all the construction and purchasing of materials, so I'm only looking for brain power and development help. Along the way I'll be posting the files so if someone has the ability, they can build it themselves or modify the files for custom applications.

Hopefully this is a project that gets some traction and we can make a workhorse aircraft that would benefit everyone.

So, if any of this sounds good let's get started on step 1!
