Optical Flow Sensor and GPS/Mag combo?

Hey guys. Thanks in advance for the help. I wanted to verify something. I had my quad working great and wanted to add an OFS. I hooked it up correctly and did the solder bridge where I cut the 5v bridge and bridged the 3.3v on the back of my APM 2.8. Now my compass works but my GPS picks up no sattelites. Is this combo not supported or did I screw something up, or do I need to tap the power from somewhere else now for my GPS.I have the module only has one solid blue light on it and my apm blinks saying it can't get GPS lock. I searched and found something about OFS and GPS combos but can't see if they're supported together or not.

  • Gotcha. Ok I'm willing to drop it. Lol.

Kind of wish I would have gotten the pixhawk but at the time I thought it was the lesser FC. Oh well I'm still blown away by all the things it can do. Thanks again for all your help!!
  • I don't know what to tell you. I purchased my APM directly from 3DR and was able to speak with their support team about the OF issue.  They told me that the reason ArduCopter doesn't support it is because the developers concluded the APM's 8-bit CPU simply couldn't handle it.  As far your screenshot goes, I would guess these guys may believe they have a functioning OF system when in fact the APM is simply ignoring it.  SONAR and GPS are still your only options with the APM.  If you're seriously about OF you'll need to upgrade.

    Cheers!

  • There are all these videos of guys using it...

  • I've never seen anyone use OF with an APM and I don't know of any APM-compatible firmware that supports it. If you can find someone who has successfully implemented OF on the APM I would definitely hit them up for a how-to. As I mentioned earlier, I tried this myself with ArduCopter only to discover there was no support.

My advice is move up to a Pixhawk. Development on the APM is dead and buried and the price of PX4s has dropped considerably over the past year or so.

  • Oh this was after a crash that caused me to re design the quad. But what's weird is that after I crashed it, I was able to arm it and get sattelites then. I just wonder if it was using old data or something. I already ordered the newer version of it. So should work better.

I'm so confused because there are lots of people using the OFS in their quads with apm. It's not crucial but I was looking forward to having as accurate loiter and pos hold as possible.
  • HA! Looks like all the satellites were just leaking out ; )

Seriously, that's pretty messed up if it was shipped to you like that.  Fortunately, it's a simple repair and replacement GPS antennas aren't expensive.

  • I also think I found out why my GPS wasn't picking up any sattelites.

  • Ok thanks again. I hope this post helps somebody else searching for the same thing.
  • Yeah, sadly that's the gist of it.  I went through the exact same hoops as you have.  I picked up an OFS, tested it with Python, focused the camera, and then installed it on an APM 2.x only to discover it wasn't actually supported.  What I don't understand is why they don't just take down the page.

    =\

  • Thanks for repel ring so fast.

So even though the manual explains how to hook everything up, run the python test script, and activate the OF_Loiter code via parameters for using it, it does not actually work?

I'm not being rude,I'm just making sure before I totally give up on this part of my quad and move on.
