Optical Flow Sensor - Is it worth the trouble?

Hey guys,

I built a custom quad couple years ago that uses APM 2.0 as flight controller. I have the optical flow sensor still sitting in the box but have yet to install. Currently have MB1260 for sonar.

It seems on APM 2.0, to install the optical flow sensor I have to solder some fairly small connections on the board. I have a good soldering iron with temp control and some decent soldering experience, but is it worth it? I have not really seen any examples of anyone actually using the opt flow sensor.

BTW Version 3.2 is really enjoyable to fly, many thanks to those who have added code. I have been out of the game for a couple years and very cool to see the improvement over the years. Looks like I have some catching up to do on the hardware side....

  • Ok I soldered the three connections, loaded the test firmware but getting this error:

    Failed to initialise ADNS3080

    Any ideas?

  • I guess you noted that sonar is no longer supported? I'm looking at the optical sensor too. I found a nice x60 magnifier with light cheap on eBay for the tricky soldering.
