Please help with motor noise issue.

I'm new to the RC hobby and dirt poor so I've been building a DIY fpv system for my quad for about 50 bucks.

The issue I currently have is when the motors start spinning I get complete signal loss for roughly half a second every second or so. It doesn't seem completely regular so I don't think its a software or wiring problem. When the motors aren't spinning I get perfectly clear signal.

The transmitter only shares a power circuit with the microprocessor and the camera but not the motors. The transmitter also has a voltage regulator between it and everything else on the circuit. I've already tried swapping through channels and none of the other channels changed the problem. If I move the transmitter about a foot and a half away from the platform it works even with the motors spinning. Unfortunately this is quite unpractical.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong since I've seen fpv set ups on much smaller platforms.

    There are two basic types of Radio interference ... the ones that move through wires and the ones that move thru the air. If you've completely separated the wiring to the point of having two batteries then its got to be that the interference is coming thru the air... from the motors and esc wiring (which act a bit like a transmitting antenna in this case )and being absorbed by some of the wiring in the video circuit (which are acting a bit like a receiving antenna) ... and because they are so close together the antennas dont need to be good for this to cause you problems.

    You need sheilding on all you video cables and you may need sheilding right around your camera. A simple way to test this is to put the entire fpv transmitter and camera circuit in a metal box (don't short things to it), except the fov antenna, and thrn see if the motors still create interference.
