Quadcopter Newbie: 3DR DIY Kit or AeroQuad Typhoon Kit?

I'm new to the quadcopter world, but was bitten bythe bug when my brother-in-law showed me his Phantom a few weeks ago. I'll be taking some vacation pretty soon, so decided I wanted to build my own (ARF) vs buying a pre-built model. (I'm also starting to learn Arduino, so there's a hope that I will be able to hack and customize my copter further in the future.)

I've narrowed my search to the 3D Robotics Quad Kit and the AeroQuad Typhoon Kit. Does anyone have any experience with either kit or have advice on which would be better for a newbie like me?

  • After much reading and deliberating, I've decided to go with the AeroQuad. Main criteria were ability "hack" and expand, and the fact that the AeroQuad is camera-payload-capable out of the box. Can't wait to start building next week!

Now I need to choose my Tx/Rx and batteries.

Any suggestions for a solid beginner Radio? I've read the Turnigy 9x is a good option.
