Quadcopter Thrust and Current Calculation

Hey,

I'm a newbie. Im trying to build a quadcopter.

I'm using:

  1. 2700kv Brusless DC outrunner motor(Idle current: 1.8A Load current: 18.5A Power (Watt): 240 Peak.Amps :14-22 A) http://www.fasttech.com/product/1448806-a2212s-2700kv-outrunner-brushless-motor
  2. 30A ESC with BEC 2A/5V http://www.amazon.com/Hobbypower-Brushless-Controller-Multicopter-Quadrotor/dp/B00E95VG2I
  3. ArduPilot APM2.5
  4. F450 Frame
  5. Battery: 5200mah 11.1V 45C 3S http://www.ebay.com/itm/HobbyFans-2S-7-4V-3S-11-1V-4S-14-8V-45C-Max-85C-LiPo-Battery-for-RC-Car-Aircraft-/181305913848?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item2a36acb1f8

My doubt is : have i chosen the right combination of motor, esc and battery? When i tried running it without propeller just after calibration one of my escs were very hot. I gave throttle for very less time (2 mins not continuously though). What could be the problem?

  • I need some help sorting out what Motor/Prop/Battery Combo I need for my 2313 gram (includes +20% for overhead) TBS clone frame!

The way I figure it, thrust per motor will need to be: 2313 x 2 = 4626/4 = 1156.5 grams of thrust per motor to hover at 50% throttle?

I would like to have 10 to 15 minutes of stable flight time as I will be doing some filming with a Gopro Hero3+ Black Edition and Tarot Gimbal.

I have tried using eCalc, however I cant seem to find the balance of prop size/motor/battery size to fit my requirements.

I appreciate your input and advice and look forward to replies from the community!

  • Hey Thomas,

    Thanks for your valuable advise.

I replaced my esc's with the OPTO 30A. There is no heating problem now and all the motors rotate uniformly when throttle is given.

Now my only problem is the quad is too sensitive and there is too much vibration. Can i add weight to make it work right ? or Replacing motor is the only option ?

I am thinking 920kv dji BLDC motor. It should satisfy my thrust need and controlling should be musch easier !

My only concern is should i replace my battery or anything if i go with that motor ?

    Thanks in advance

  • Thanks for the reply ! Is it motor fine ? more the rpm lesser the thrust generated right ? Mine has a 2700kv which is too much. My quad weighs 2kgs and im planning to add more. Should i replace it? all the esc's are heating a bit though....

btw i replaced that esc. Some ppl are saying if i fit the props and try it will not heat up due to the load and also considering the high rpm/V rating of the motor. Your opinon ?

I am finding it difficult to calculate thrust. Please help.

    Another query,

Is the battery discharge rate a problem ? it says 45 C but it only provides current at that rate only if the motor draws that much right ?

    Ganesh,

The batt seem little big for such model but milage varies. 2000 - 3000mAh would be comfortable on the airframe.

The Esc runs hot because it may be faulty. Replace it , I assume  other three are not getting hot.
