Tethered Quad

Hi Everyone,

I want to build a Quad for tethered flight. Something that can climb and hold for long durations. Its just a hobby project, so I don't have any huge problems regarding reliability right now.

So here are the requirements:

1. Should be able to climb upto 200ft.

2. if the power supply fails from ground station the copter just lands using its battery power.

3. should be able to carry a gimble and go pro.

The weight of twisted pair cable that long will come out about 700-1000gm. Plus the wind effect on cable and craft. I think an addition 1kg of payload capability will be good. So a total payload capacity of 2kg should be good.  Plus if I decide to give 220V AC from the ground station to keep the losses low and wire thin. I will need an additional about 1kg for the power supply.

So lets say 3kg of total payload.

I am little tight on budget here so I was thinking of buying IRIS and modding it to my requirement. But IRIS has a payload capacity of only ~450gm. And I think, after putting the camera and gimple it has none. Can an IRIS be modded for that kind of payload. I now an x8 configuration will be better from reliability perspective but its too expensive. If I have to build one. What kind of frame/motors/props should I look for.

  • While I was thinking about whether to build one or buy IRIS, Is it possible to upgrade the IRIS with say Tiger U3 motors (plus corresponding props and esc). will the frame allow for larger motor and props both structurally and space wise.
