Trouble with MinimOSD, Have video but no overlay?

Hi,

I see similar problems reported but have not found my answer.

With my setup I am powering the camera, OSD board stage 2, and the video TX separately but with the same 12 V battery. I have red lights on both stages of the OSD board (that's a good thing?). I have video (yellow wire) from camera, to OSD to video TX. I have the ground for camera to video TX. I have re-flashed the firmware and character set.  I have disable the OSD toggle with the configuration program.I have a 3DR radio in the system and I believe i have both it and the OSD connected to the APM 2.5 correctly.

I get the video from the camera transmitted but I do not get the OSD overlay. One symptom is that I don't have voltage from the 12V pin.(see picture)

Is my OSD board fried or am I not wiring it up correctly?

Please help and don't leave me hanging!

Thanks

farmertom

  • I realize that this thread is a two years old, but I thought that I could give some input for anyone else having the same issue. After reading all the posts, I too came to the conclusion that the camera was the real culprit. I'm cheap, so I decided that there must be a way to get it to work with my existing gear.

I was able to get the overlay to display using the following work around:

    1. Only run the video signal to the OSD

    2. Power the transmitter and camera from a different power source.

    3. Plug in the batter to your rig

    4. If your camera and transmitter are plugged in, notice that you will have video but no overlay.

    5. Disconnect power to your camera

    6. Reset the OSD by pushing the small reset button on the board.

    7. Reconnect power to your camera.

It should work now. I have had success with this workaround procedure.

  • Hi all, Been reading through this and various other posts..

I have a slightly different but just as frustrating problem with minimosd and 3dr radio set up.

    1. If i connect just the 3dr, i get mavlink values through to MP no problem.

    2. If i disconnect 3dr, connect rx/tx to the OSD, it fires up, video fine, over lay fine, data fine.

    3. If i connect 3dr & OSD, neither mp connects or osd doesn't overlay. (both rx/tx connected)

    4. if i connect 3dr (tx&tx), and the OSD (just RX) osd doesnt seem to power up, no video passthrough, no overlay.

Has anyone else experienced problem with OSD not working unless the osd tx line is connected to the apm rx??

Ive updated to latest firmware, in fact tried several different ones.

Seems my problem is that osd wont work without red tx cable connected, but 3dr wont work if i do....

    Any idea??

  • Hi all,
    Thanks for everyone responses!
I have purchased a new camera. A Hobby King HD Wing Camera II, I have installed just as I had installed my old HoryzonHD V3 camera and I am now getting overlay over my video, Like magic, first time. I have had problems with the HoryzonHD V3 camera with my Fat Shark SD goggles too. So a lesson learned. I hope this helps someone else out.
    Thanks

  • Try reflashing the bootloader. The ATmegaBOOT_168_atmega328 hex should be in your arduino folder. Search for it on your computer.

I used extreme burner and a USBasp to reprogram the bootloader.

Follow these instructions, it was easy.

  • Tom,

Have you tried bringing up this problem with the  FoxTECH guys? They might have some insight with that camera.

Also, Nathaniel had suggested posting these issues on the "Adding extra functions to minimOSD" thread, did you try that?

You could also try a test with a DVD player or some other video device just as a control, in an attempt to narrow the problem down between your camera and particular minim board.

  • Well experimented more this morning. Since Wayne got his minim working by fixing the connection and others have reported but changing the video wire their minim starting working. I thought that the minim might be very sensitive to what video voltage it was receiving.

I thought that I would put an inline variable resistor to see if my video out was too hot for the minim. So with the entire system on and looking into my goggles I can see the overlay, adjusting the resistor the video image starts to flicker and scramble, and I start to see the video from the camera, one or the other not both. I never saw an image where there was both an overlay and the video. I continue to adjust the resistor and all i get is the camera video.

I have run out of ideas on this. Have I broken this when i shorted the 12V pins? Should I get a new minim or go with something else?

something the cows just out smart you!

    Wayne,

Great to see you figured it out!

    Tom,

I want you to try something for me....it's going to sound strange but I was watching a you tube video looking for similar issues and I saw something that made me wonder. You said that when you have the camera plugged in you have video but no OSD and likewise you have OSD without the camera. What happens if you have both plugged in and you cover the lens either with a lens cap or with your hand. When the video goes dark do you get the OSD overlay?

Just something to try...another piece of the puzzle perhaps.

  • Tom,

Is there any chance you have another camera with video out that you could try?

    Tom,

What camera make and model are you using and how many volts can it operate on? Also how are you powering the APM?

    Hey Tom,

Glad to see you have made some progress over night! So to recap you now have 12 volts where previously you had none on the TX side of the board, you disconnected the VTX and voila you could see the OSD displayed on a black screen. You updated your wiring diagram to reflect the APM 2.5 boards pin assignments.

Question: When you saw the OSD display, were the fields populated with valid data? In other words was it functioning properly and giving you altitude and attitude information coming from the APM, is this in agreement with the information as it is being displayed in the Mission Planner?

Second Question: After rereading your original post and looking at the picture in your first post I need clarification of how your two stages are being powered. Are you using two different batteries to power the APM and the VTX/Camera 2nd Stage OSD? IE do you have one battery powering the VTX, Camera and the 2nd Stage of the OSD, then a second battery powering the APM board? They don't share a ground connection correct?

It's looking up for you my friend I feel pretty good about your chances now, keep your spirits up we'll get there!

    Regards,

    Nathaniel ~KD2DEY

P.S. I'm going to be working on putting my MinimOSD board in my new Super Sky Surfer tonight! This things a monster!!
