Attempted to update firmware last night via the current version of the Mission Planner, but repeatedly received the following error:
"Failed to download new firmware: Exception of type ‘System.Exception’ was thrown"
Turned off the Windows 7 firewall and virus checker, resulting in the same error.
I am loading an APM and oil pan that was purchased around last Xmas time. In March, I loaded firmware via the Arduino IDE to verify that the two boards worked (they did!). Just received the 3DR frame and am now trying to load the current software.
Any help would be much appreciated.

btw, have you tried to upload via Arduino recently?

Downloaded v1.0.85 last night - I presume thats the current one.
BTW - the Flight Data feature in the planner works fine with the old software load, if that helps.
And no, I have not tried to download the software via the IDE yet - was hoping to get the planner to do it since its so much easier. Will try to download via the IDE tonight.

Have you set a tick "Set RTS on close" in advanced COM port settings on your pc?
Permalink Reply by Lloyd DeForrest on October 24, 2011 at 3:01pm yes I did.
Has anyone ever seen that not so descriptive error message in conjunction with downloading (to the PC) and uploading (to the APM) the firmware?
there are a couple of reason why this could be failing
1. cant write to firmware.hex, in the planner directory
2. some google local cacheing issue. (does happen)
and thats realy about it.
can you try say the hil firmware to test?
Permalink Reply by Lloyd DeForrest on October 24, 2011 at 7:17pm Michael, I got it working. Thank you.
# 1 was the clue.
I re-downloaded the Mission Planner folder to the C drive and all works now.
Thanks again.

I forgot to mention the root cause of my problem, which may be helpful to others.
When downloading the folder of APM Mission Planner files, the file firmware.hex file was set with a Windows 7 security flag called "Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer". I needed to unblock the file under the file’s properties to get Mission Planner to work.
Thanks again for the clue.

Permalink Reply by Andre Kotze on January 3, 2012 at 3:13pm I am getting the following error when attempting to update my APM using the mission planner. Any suggestions please?
are you behind a proxy? the error is because the planner could not download the firmware file for some reason.
