US Regulation Clairification?

How is built up areas defined?

I live in a residental with nearly all 1 story building and behind my back yard is a wooded creek area.  If I take off from my back yard (~75x40 foot) and fly over my back yard or the woods am I legal or is this too close to the "built up area".  Beyond the woods is a small park that will put me at least an eight of a mile from any houses in any direction and woods between the park and any house, is this sufficient?

Does fully controlled (fly by wire since true manual control of quad or tri copter isn't particularly practical) fall under the same conditions?

Also I live about 8 miles from a major airport and one mile off one of the arrival/departure routes but it sounds like this is not an issue as the limit of interest is about 3 miles?

Thanks in advance for the input.

If its yellow on your local sectional chart its a built up area, well in the UK anyway. I'm sure its the same there.
