USB while under ESC power

Is it safe to have the APM2 hooked up to the ESC/BEC while it's also plugged into USB?

I looked at the schematics and it looks like there's some kind of protection, but I'm not sure.

Season Two of the Trust Time Trial (T3) Contest has now begun. The fourth round is an accuracy round for multicopters, which requires contestants to fly a cube. The deadline is April 14th.
